MetalMouth needed to chew some bite sized fat with Midlands punk/metal hybrids, Reign of Fury, prior to their debut Bloodstock appearance:
How did you choose your bands name?
Rof : Magic Dave and Ed “Banger” Westlake started RoF in late 05/ early 06 as a side project they were initially called Reign of Terror but changed it to Reign of Fury before their first, and only gig. After that RoF was shelved until 2008. RoF was chosen as it represented the bands music and noone else has that name. When we reformed we toyed with different names but came back to agreeing on Reign of Fury as it best represented what we were about and more importantly sounded like.
What’s the most difficult thing you encounter as an emerging band, and how have you overcome it?
Matt Earl : two things really, firstly trying to promote the band over the never ending sea of other great bands on facebook vying for your attention www.facebook.com/reignoffury 😉 The 2nd Biggest problem I find is booking shows for RoF out of town ( Cheltenham/Glos) in the UK that pay a guarantee ( not a DOOR DEAL ). So far in Europe venues are great they want to look after you and give you an agreed fee, hot meal ,somewhere to stay the list goes on, whereas a lot of UK promoters and venues think a packet of crisps and a free beer is ok when you have travelled 5 hours to play and paid the hire van and fuel out of your own pockets and can’t afford a Travelodge.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some great UK promoters and venues that do look after you, but sadly they are in the minority which can be embarassing when putting on a bill from outside the UK and explaining to the bands from abroad that the venue wont give you anything for playing and there’s no food and nowhere to stay , oh and the promoter didn’t actually promote the gig by putting any posters up you sent him or telling anyone the gig was on even though that was your job…hahahaha I’m not bitter. Cunts.
How would you describe Reign of Fury’s sounds?
Matt Earl : Classic, sometimes epic heavy metal with elements of thrash , punk and hardcore. More a street sound than over polished we like to have the rough edges \m/
How did you get to be a part of the festival?
Matt Earl: I sent our EP off and we were contacted by the organisers to play so we were pretty shocked tbh as I forgot I sent it off.
What are the nerves like right now? Is this your biggest ever audience/first festival appearance?
RoF : Yes it is our biggest audience so far, we did play a festival in 2010 in Swindon called sugarhill but Bloodstock is far bigger than that.
Matt Earl : I don’t think we get nervous usually as we all love playing but I expect there could be pre gig nerves just before we get onstage , but as soon as that first power chord is struck we forget everything get our heads down and try and entertain, we really vibe off the crowd and power of our music so hopefully the crowd will get behind us
What bands are you most looking forward to seeing at Bloodstock?
RoF : Nile , C.O.C, Testament , Hatebreed, Iced Earth , Anvil , Alice Cooper , Sepultura , Machine Head to name a few.
Matt Earl: if you made it to Bloodstock as a band you are worth watching. I must say after all the bullshit I have read on facebook about who and who isn’t playing. This is a top notch festival, fuck all the haters, this festival is about a big party enjoying the metal way of life and acceptance of all forms of rock /metal and extreme music. If you are not part of the party then fuck off, paint your room black and sit on your own in your own little euphoria….if they only knew the logistical nightmare of getting the bands free to play at the same time anyway rant over for now… Hahaha…. next question
Are there any other up and coming bands out there you would recommend keeping an eye on right now?
Matt Earl : yep a local band to me Karhu have blown me away with their release a very young band with a great attitude check em out !!
Do you have any funny stories from your route to Bloodstock (or any previous times that you have been to the festival) that you would like to share with the MetalMouth readers?
RoF: None that you can print !!
Are there any messages that you would like to pass on to your fans?
RoF : We will see you down the front on sunday afternoon at Bloodstock thanks for the support so far ,come say hi if you see us around….oh yeah and buy the album “ World Detonation “out 13th August free song download via our facebook music page www.facebook.com/reignoffury
