The New Blood Stage exists to provide a platform for the next generation of metal talent to reach a wider audience. From Bloodstock’s very beginning back in 2001 there has been a focus on offering a chance for newcomers – the new blood if you will – to strut their stuff.
The New Blood Stage is an exceptional opportunity for emerging acts to perform in front of Bloodstock’s dedicated audience of metal fans and important music industry figures. Those lucky enough to secure a slot on the New Blood Stage also get to play both Wacken Open Air in Germany and Metal Camp in Slovenia.
Bloodstock’s always supported the next generation of bands and to me it was obvious they needed a platform to show their wares – Bloodstock founder Paul Raymond Gregory
Band Name: Black Emerald
Band Members: Dave Toland – Guitar/Vocals; Simon Hall Bass/Vocals; Ed Higgs- Guitar; Connor Shortt – Drums.
Year Formed: 2005
The band at Bloodstock most likely to: Sweat ourselves to death on stage.
Give me the ‘Hollywood Film’ version of how the band formed and how you came to be named.
Black Emerald Formed through a stoner haze, when we discovered that making a load of noise on these instruments seemed to sound vaguely good. And then in one of those high stupors, the name became clear, Black Emerald, which made no sense but perfect sense to us.
What style of metal do you play?
The Real question is what style of metal don’t we play?! It’s a far shorter list. I suppose you could say we don’t play power metal or Death Metal. But we realised this a week or so ago, and thusly will be putting this right!
What bands would you say your music is ‘for fans of’ ?
To be honest, I don’t think there are many bands that sound like us. We always find trouble placing ourselves in areas with other bands. I suppose you can liken us most to Svolk… If they sounded nothing like themselves…
How did you get your slot at the Festival?
This is a golden secret… Best way to get a festival slot, is like the way we did. Butt kiss like you never have before! But when that doesn’t work, threaten them… Corner them and just abuse them until you get it! We did it, and look… Now we are playing Bloodstock!
What’s the first thing you did after you found out you had a slot?
After we found out we had the slot, we each took it in turns to sacrifice an animal of our choice.
Which of your tracks do you think will create the biggest wave of headbanging?
All of them, next question please…
Is this the largest event you have played, and what are the nerves like?
Apart from headlining all other rock festivals?… OH WAIT that’s Iron Maiden, I suppose this is the biggest thing to have happened to us. The nerves at the moment are fine, but incase you don’t know what nerves are here is a definition: (in the body) A whitish fiber or bundle of fibers that transmits impulses of sensation to the brain or spinal cord.
Which band members are likely to have the most incriminating photos after the festival?
We are all guilty of incriminating photos after each show. I should imagine that Bloodstock will only increase how incriminating the photos are. But I believe that Dave’s will be just WRONG…. I have the police on speed dial…
Which bands are you most looking forward to seeing?
I am most looking forward to Avantasia. Love a smidge of Rock opera! GONNA BE GOOOOOOOD! Unless you are on about in general i would have to say Annihilator!
What have been the best moments for you at previous Bloodstock Festivals?
I’ve never been…. So the most memorable moment will be playing Bloodstock the first time I go!
What is your current release? Explain a little about it….
Our current release is an E.P. called Isolation, combining influences of southern rock, stoner, hard rock and general arse-kickery, it also contains a cover of a song by a little known band called Annihilator. It’s up on iTunes, and streamable on Spotify.
Lastly, a set clash with a main stage band, give a good reason/threat/sob story as to why fans should come watch you instead..
If we clash with a main stage band, then it is quite simple. We will storm the main stage, take off whoever is playing, and just do our set there… End of argument.
Black Emerald are playing Bloodstock Festival on Sunday 11th August.
