Perth, Australia’s progressive and experimental black metal newcomers Ur Draugr are nothing short of magnificent.
The group was founded by Drew James Griffiths (bass/guitars/vocals) in 2014 and later joined by Dean Lockhart (guitars) and Dan Grainger (drums) who are former and current members of Impiety, Wardaemonic, DeathFuckingCunt, Morphica and more. The extreme trio’s debut EP “The Wretched Ascetic” has just been released on January 8th, and it’s a banger of a release.
Like an angry bastard lovechild of Gojira, Enslaved and Behemoth, Ur Draugr have created a disgustingly good quality, mesmerizing and ominous release that displays the perfect contrast of grim blackened atmosphere and heavy riffs, with melting acoustic passages showcasing their delicate prog abilities.
The song structuring is exceptional and leads the listener by the barbed wire wrapped hand into a dark and dangerous realm, only occasionally showing you there is an escape from the blackness with the odd pinpoint of light, before smashing you head first through a wall and waiting for you on the other side in the rubble of your emotion with a shisha pipe and a great big hug.
And the vicious vocal should have you by all accounts, quivering in your boots. Wonderful!
The band are working on their yet-untitled first full-length album, tentatively due in late 2015 and if the EP is anything to go by, the album could well make my top list of 2015. Buy the EP here.

Definitely a band to keep a very close eye on.
